MAULDIN, SC - The 2005 BI-LO Charity Classic Golf Tournament will tee off Monday, June 13 to once again raise much-needed funds for charities throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The event will take place on eleven Upstate South Carolina golf courses, and BI-LO officials say they hope the fund-raising efforts of this year's tournament top the lofty $3.7 million raised in last year's tournament.
"The importance of this event to the communities BI-LO serves is immeasurable," said Dean Cohagan, BI-LO's president and CEO. "The money we have raised in the past with this event has made a significant impact on thousands of lives. We want to continue this tradition of giving to these organizations."
BI-LO Director of Corporate Communications Joyce Smart said the tournament has been helping special needs organizations and educational programs for more than 20 years. "This has really become a staple," said Smart. "We are so pleased to see how this event has grown and to help all of these organizations with their fundraising efforts."
Founded in 1984 as a fundraiser for Meals On Wheels of Greenville, BI-LO's annual golf tournament has raised more than $24 million since its inception, placing funding emphasis on hunger relief programs, children's charities and education. Meals on Wheels organizations in all four states that BI-LO serves receive funding from the Charity Classic, helping these groups serve over 14,000 meals to the elderly and disabled every day of the year.
In addition to Meals on Wheels, organizations that benefited from the 2004 Charity Classic included Loves and Fishes of Greenville, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Greenville, Sister Care, Inc., of South Carolina, the Urban League of Chattanooga, the Health Resource Foundation of South Carolina, Tamassee Daughters of the American Revolution School in South Carolina, and more than 400 throughout Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Headquartered in Mauldin, SC, BI-LO/Bruno's operates 422 stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. The company employs approximately 30,000 associates.
